Solar Energy for Solidarity and Sustainable Development, ES2DD, a commited NGO

A project for renewable energies integrating local population

On the occasion of EVER Monaco, the Mediterranean Institute for Market Research and Sustainable Development had the opportunity to share a moment with Mr. Christian Avérous, former chief of the Division of Performance and Environmental Information to the OECD, now President of the French NGO E2S2D (Solar Energy for Solidarity and Sustainable Development), whose mission is part of the development, promotion and use of solar energy while supporting sustainable development in France and the world.

The association ‘Energy for Solar Solidarity and Sustainable Development’ (E2S2D) is created to contribute i) to saving energy and promoting renewable energy, and ii) to sustainable development, including its social, environmental, economic dimensions.
Its mission is the development, promotion and use of solar energy in support of sustainable development, in France and worldwide. For example, this includes high and low temperatures thermosolar technology, such as solar furnaces (3000°C, for small and medium size enterprises) and solar ovens (120°C, for cooking within families).
While nearly one billion people live in extreme poverty* (UN source) and suffer from chronic hunger (FAO source), the association E2S2D aims to install solar furnaces for SMEs in islands and rural areas, and solar ovens (with greenhouse effect) for families, the later with the help of school children and their mothers. This will reduce operating costs for SMEs and cooking costs for families, thereby counteracting high prices of energy and food products. The association stresses training, acting with lasting and leveraging effects, and generating local jobs.
Thus, thermosolar energy can be used at local level in an autonomous way, with multiple social, environmental and economic benefits, both tangible and visible for people.
E2S2D is a non-profit association under French law.

The quality of bathing water is good in the Principality of Monaco

On June the 16th, 2011, the Mediterranean Institute for Market Research  and Sustainable Development took part in a Green Thursday "Waste water and bathing water", organized by the NGO  MC2D and the Monegasque Town Hall. During the visit, the participants visited the treatment plant for wastewater in Monaco and the French surrounding cities. The visit continued with a presentation of the Monegasque policy in terms of wastewater treatments, and a debate between NGO’s, businesses and institutions. As evidenced on  this video, the quality of bathing water is good in Monaco.

** The Principality of Monaco follows the European directives on wastewater treatments (although it is not  a member of the European Union) and has set up a system of analysis and monitoring of waters requiring more frequently actions than requested in the directive. The quality of wastewater is one of the most important environmental issues  for the Government of Monaco.

“Minutes news” : reform of the Brazilian Forest Code

I
The brazilian forest code dates from 1965. This Code requires forest owners to preserve intact a portion (up to 80% in Amazonia). He also planned to protect certain sensitive areas like river banks, the summits and slopes of the hills…

This code is about to be changed, the brazilian government is preparing to pass a reform that proposes :
- an amnesty for the actions of deforestation prior to 2008,
- review of areas of legal protection on the downside.

The new forest code was approved by 410 votes against 63, and 10 abstentions in the Chamber of Deputies. Before validation, this bill must still be approved by the Senate.

Some figures about the brazilian forests:
- off Amazon (30% decrease of its forested area in 30 years), Brazil has forest cover than 4% of its territory,
- over 2 million km² of Atlantic forest have already gone up in smoke (almost 4 times the size of France)
- during the month of April 2011, 593 km² were deforested (ie an area six times greater than during the same period in 2010).

A marine knot linked to Monaco, to seal a partnership for children, seas and oceans

Alexia Barrier, from the NGO 4myplanet and Virginie Lelarge, founder of the Mediterranean Institute for Market Research and Sustainable Development (the IMEDD), sealed by a marine knot, on May the 5th, 2011, in the majestic setting of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, a partnership to serve children, seas and oceans.

By marking this common will to work together to promote children education and awareness in the marine world and species, 4myplanet and the IMEDD want to show that it is important to invest its energy "for the children" so they can grow and build values, such as those conveyed through sport and sustainable development.

4myplanet and the IMEDD reflect their Corporate Social actions for children in different ways.
Alexia Barrier with 4myplanet completed a world tour in 2010, and the children from Monaco followed her, to understand her journey, especially dedicated to the collection of scientific data. 4myplanet organizes awareness days with the children, teaching them tools regarding the marine world, the treatments of waste while sailing,…
The IMEDD, meanwhile, scored the duty of transmitting Corporate Social values to future generations in its Charter on Corporate Social Responsibility, and materializes its commitment through "Bio Logika", an ecogame dedicated to children education about environmental issues, or through its participation in Monacology, The Monegasque Awareness Week for Children On Environment and Sustainable Development, an event conducted under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness, Prince Albert II of Monaco.
**Monacology is an event initiated by the NGO Act for Nature and the Stars’n'Bars.

Discover the reasons why 4MYPLANET and the IMEDD sealed a partnership, thanks to a marine knot…
